This Week, Next week, and North Sevier Team Tournament Slideshow

This week we will only have one practice, Tuesday from 5-7 pm.  We hope you all enjoy your holiday break and have a Merry Christmas!

Next week, we'll only have the one practice on Tuesday (December 30th), due to New Years. We will have coaches at the Salt Lake Slam on January 2-3 in Farmington if you want to go. You will need a USA Card, and register on Track Wrestling. Weigh in's are in Farmington on January 1st. If you want to go and need more information, please get with one of the coaches.

Our team did AWESOME at the North Sevier Tournament! Our team record was  5-3, winning Beaver, Page (Arizona), the Extras Team, Monticello, and South Sevier.  We fell short to Juab, Millard, and Canyon View, maninly because they all had full rosters, and we had to forfeit six weight classes.

We had two undefeated wrestlers:

Mason Cox
Tezlin Winn

Here's a slideshow from our day. There should be 111 pictures. If you can't view them all on your mobile device, try a desktop computer. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT!

Parents:

A couple of wrestlers have reported ringworm. We talked to all the boys last night at practice about hygiene and showering after practices and tournaments, but we need you to enforce it. Ringworm can be very serious if left untreated. Please have your wrestlers check their ENTIRE BODY for signs, and get it taken care of if they have it. You can try an anti-fungal cream (over the counter), and if that doesn't help, please see your doctor. They can perscribe stronger creams, or oral medication. It's a lot harder to stay on top of if you let it get out of control.

We do our part at the gym, everything is sanitized before the wrestlers get to practice. Please make sure your wrestler showers after every practice and tournament, and does not wear the same practice clothes twice (without being washed). We also want you to wash all their wrestling gear after each tournament. You can wipe down headgear with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. The singlets and warm ups are safe to wash at home, we just recommend hanging the singlet to dry. Warm up's can be thrown in the dryer.

Also, we need payments made for the tournament this weekend. If your wrestler hasn't paid, please drop their $10 off to Farmers Insurance (85 East Center Street, Gunnison) by 5 pm, or you can drop it off at Coach Winn's house after 5 pm (465 East 400 South, Centerfield). We are required to turn in our roster and payments to North Sevier by Thursday afternoon, so please get it paid as soon as possible.

Leaving early is not fair to the other wrestlers, or the coaches that are willing to put in their time.  We understand that you may have other places to be and other kids to attend to, and that's fine. We'll bring your wrestler home, just let us know!

Water Issue

Parents: During practice last night, we noticed our water fountain doesn't have very much water pressure. We're going to allow each wrestler to bring their own water bottle to practice. We will also provide cold water and cups for those who forget, or simply don't want to worry about remembering to bring their own water.

All wrestlers worked hard at practice, and are probably very sore this morning! Please have your child do their homework the Coaches assigned: 50 push-ups and sit-ups in the morning, again after school, and then again before bed. This will help them move a little easier in practice during conditioning, not to mention during duals and tournaments!

Our next practice is tomorrow (Thursday), from 5-7 pm.

IMPORTANT: If you're a coaching parent (or if you come inside the gym to pick up your wrestler), please remember that we do not allow street shoes on the mats. Please walk around the outside of the big mat, or remove your shoes. If you're going to step on the big mat, we ask that you are in your socks or wrestling shoes.

If any wrestlers need a ride to or from practice, let one of the coaches know. We'd be happy to pick them up or take them home.

Here are a few pics from practice:

See you tonight!

Wrestling Gear

We've had a few parents ask for suggestions on what gear their kids might need this year for wrestling. We only require the team singlet, but here's a short list of optional items that we think are important:

*Shoes. Yes, you can wrestle in your socks or bare feet. But wrestling shoes are designed to give the wrestler support and better traction on the mat. If your child is going to be serious about wrestling, get them a good pair of shoes. They do make a difference.

*Headgear. There are so many different types and brands of headgear out there. After trial and error, the best we've found so far is the Cliff Keen Tornado. It's a little bit pricier than some other headgear out there, but it's proven better than all the others we've tested. It's lightweight and very comfortable. Plus, the wrestler can still hear when they've got it on. I don't think any of the duals or tournaments in our area will require headgear this year, but if your child is going to wrestle in high school, they need to get used to wearing it. Plus, who wants cauliflower ear anyways?

*Compression Tights. Not every wrestler wears these, but they do offer an extra layer of protection (and coverage) under their singlet, and make it easier to slide on the mat. If you do get your wrestler some compression tights, we suggest the ones with stirrups on them. This keeps them in place during matches.

*Compression Shorts. If you don't go with the tights, compression shorts are a good idea. They help with coverage under the singlets. Almost every sport uses compression shorts, so your wrestler should get pretty good use out of them.

*Knee Pads. These are used mainly in practice, but some wrestlers do prefer them during matches. They help avoid mat burns when sliding across the mat, and also help you slide on the mat easier if you don't wear compression tights.

*USA Card. If you're planning on going to any of the tournaments in Northern Utah (Super State, Salt Lake Slam, etc.) or the Beehive Brawl in Richfield, you'll need a USA Card. You can follow the link we've listed in the side bar to get one.
